The Kamniška Bistrica River
Slovenia
General Description
The Domžale-Kamnik Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is located in Kamniška Bistrica valley, more specifically in Domžale, Slovenia. Municipal, industrial wastewater and rainwater from the municipalities of Domžale, Kamnik, Mengeš, Trzin, Komenda, and Cerklje na Gorenjskem flow through the sewerage system into the Domžale-Kamnik WWTP where it is treated and discharged into the Kamniška Bistrica River.
The WWTP receives wastewater from all the households connected to the wastewater system and from all large industrial sources. The capacity of the plant is 149,000 PE.
The main water source on this INSPIRE demo site will be the effluent from the Domžale-Kamnik WWTP before discharge into the river Kamniška Bistrica. The project will focus on retention of microplastics (goal of ≥ 99% removal) by a sequence of 2 or 3 filtering systems, aiming to reduce the discharge of microplastics (< 5 mm).
The filtering systems consist of Super-TW-Net filter for tyre microplastics, special CLERA SiC membrane filtration unit, and EcoPlex Microplastic remover. Following their removal from the water, the retained micro and nanoplastics will be eliminated through photocatalytic degradation of microplastics which accelerates, in a controlled manner, the degradation of plastics.
