Nicola Rubini from the INSPIRE team of MOLD participated in the 4th International Workshop on Marine Litter Monitoring, Removal and Circular Economy held in Venice on May 30th
The International Workshop on Marine Litter Monitoring, Removal and Circular Economy is an event held in Venice, every year, under the framework of the Venice Boat Show. It brings together private and public stakeholders related to the Blue Economy and to the correct governance and management of the sea, promoting it as a precious natural resource and enabling factor for our everyday lives.
This event, hosted by CNR at the CNR-ISMAR headquarters, offers a rather unique perspective on the topic of monitoring and collecting plastic litter: not only it gives space to local and international technology providers, it showcases also recycling and litter processing technologies. These can prove to be critical in closing the loop, while also making the management of litter economically viable and sustainable.
During the workshop, MOLD presented the setup of hybridized MOLD-MINDS system that will be deployed in one of the main branches of Po River for 12 months, in the scope of the INSPIRE project. The system, combining a River Cleaning barrier and the Clean Trash cage (developed in cooperation with other EC funded projects such as REMEDIES and CLAIM) will be covering part of the river width and will be equipped with new features to produce its own clean energy. Finally, AI-mounted cameras will enable the identification of litter.
The Po River is one of the biggest riverine systems in Italy and Europe. It plays a fundamental part in the litter reduction strategy and is a major point of interest for stakeholders that look to identify enviro-tech innovations that can be replicated on a wider scale.
Through this event and more that will be organized in the near future, MOLD, MINDS and CNR look forward raising the attention on the INSPIRE Po River use case, one of the most structured operations undertaken in Italy to test innovative solutions and make decisive steps towards pollution-free European rivers.
