Last week, the INSPIRE Project team visited a marina along the Douro River, which will soon become the site of an innovative wastewater processing technology developed by our partner Waste&Water. This marks a significant milestone for the project and for the future health of the river.
The cutting-edge solution is designed to treat wastewater directly at the marina, helping to improve water quality and protect the river ecosystem. By addressing pollution at its source, this technology will play a key role in preventing contaminants from entering the river and flowing downstream into the Atlantic Ocean.
“Seeing the site in person brought our vision one step closer to reality, and we are excited about the positive impact this innovation will have on the Douro River,” said the INSPIRE team.
This initiative is part of the Douro River demo site, one of several demonstration areas within the INSPIRE Project where sustainable technologies are tested and refined.
The Douro River, the largest river in the Iberian Peninsula by discharge, begins near Duruelo de la Sierra in Spain and flows westward through northern Portugal, where it ultimately meets the Atlantic Ocean at Porto, the country’s second-largest city. Protecting this vital waterway is crucial not only for local ecosystems but also for the communities and economies that depend on it.
With this groundbreaking technology soon to be implemented, the INSPIRE Project takes another step toward its mission of combating river pollution and safeguarding waterways for generations to come.
