PIRIS replication case of INSPIRE in Istanbul’s rivers

International collaboration plays a central role in our “Plastic-Free Istanbul Streams” PIRIS initiative. Within the scope of our European Union–funded INSPIRE Project, we welcomed Prof. Dr. Gert Everaert and Prof. Dr. Joydeep Dutta to our municipality.

The PIRIS project addresses plastic pollution in Istanbul’s rivers by scaling INSPIRE’s DCP solutions through the deployment of a hybrid system combining a fish-friendly net with the Clean Trash system, alongside citizen-engaged litter removal activities. It contributes to the development of science-based and replicable solutions that support wider European implementation and the long-term protection of aquatic ecosystems.

Under the coordination of the Istanbul Bosphorus Municipalities Union, and in cooperation with our Municipality, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), İSKİ, Istanbul University, and IO Environmental Solutions, we conducted site visits, discussed the progress of the PIRIS project, and established a work plan for the coming months to ensure efficient implementation in our district.

In addition, on 11 February, we met with children aged 7–14 to talk about water conservation and sustainable use. Through interactive games, water cycle role-plays, and simple water-saving plans, they learned how small actions can help protect our rivers and seas.
