In June 2026, the University of Maribor successfully organized a citizen science engagement event for students, academic staff and public audience as part of the INSPIRE project. The event combined presentations on the project’s objectives and innovative approaches to tackling microplastic pollution with a practical field demonstration on the Drava River in Maribor.
Participants were introduced to the INSPIRE project, its role in advancing solutions for plastic pollution in aquatic environments, and its collaboration with external stakeholders, including wastewater treatment experts.
The practical workshop took place on the banks of the Drava River, where participants observed and actively engaged in a demonstration of microplastic sampling techniques. Using specialized equipment, including a Ferrybox device and following standardized sampling protocols.
The event provided valuable experience in environmental monitoring, strengthened participants’ understanding of plastic pollution challenges, and contributed to capacity building within the academic community. By linking education, research, and real-world environmental applications, the activity further supported the objectives of the INSPIRE project and promoted citizen engagement in scientific monitoring activities.
