1st INSPIRE Scientific Webinar: From observation to modelling

INSPIRE will be offering a series of scientific webinars to inform, keep up-to-date and engage a broad INSPIRE community.

Join our first scientific webinar ‘INSPIRE – From observation to modelling’, October 28, 3 – 4:30 PM CET.

The presence of plastic and other litter, including macro-, meso- and microplastics, in rivers and its transport to the coast and ocean, is of particular concern due to the potential ecological impacts of plastic litter in both freshwater and marine environments. In the INSPIRE project, we are uncovering the current pollution levels at key locations in European riverine environments where different solutions will be later implemented and tested to remove the litter or prevent it.

With this first INSPIRE scientific webinar, we will guide all interested in this topic on the work that we are conducting on monitoring riverine litter. This will include insights into sampling with the Ferrybox sampling system and Manta net for microplastics in water samples, the use of apps to record data on macrolitter, and drones and bridge-mounted camaras for macrolitter observations on the riverbanks or floating in rivers, among others.
The INSPIRE sampling and observations campaigns are only one of the first steps, as laboratory or image analysis and data processing continue this process to undercover how much plastic is polluting our rivers.
What happens after we determine the pollution levels in the project selected locations?
In the last part of the webinar, we will guide you through our modeling framework that is being used to establish the baseline pollution in European rivers, to identify the most suitable locations to implement solutions to reduce the pollution, and to assist in quantifying the interventions impact after they are realized.
